Atelier Krouwel is proud to announce to have won the tender ‘Kaasmarktschool’ (translates to: Cheese Market School). Our firm has drawn up a project vision in collaboration with Streetlife and was chosen as the winning proposal by the Municipality of Leiden. Atelier Krouwel is the appointed lead-architect of the project. The project team plans to start the permit procedure this year. An important part of the development is involving the neighbourhood and other stakeholders. The planned opening of the renovated school is early 2027.

The building will provide a mixed program of dwellings, office spaces, creative atelier and gathering spaces to create and stimulate a new creative community in the midst of the historic city center of Leiden, the Netherlands. The Cheese Market School is the former school building from 1909 of the Protestant Christian School Association in Leiden on the Cheese Market. This beautiful building has been a gathering place for artists since 1985. And since 2014 a municipal monument. Atelier Krouwel is the appointed lead-architect of the project.

In the recent press release the municipality of Leiden states the following: “The vision of the winning project plan fits in well with the vision for the Cheese Market School. The plan includes a good use of the courtyard (the old schoolyard), a green roof terrace and the desired visual opening of the facade on the Cheese Market. Streetlife has also proposed to expand the building in addition to renovation. On the ‘Koppenhinksteeg’ side and on the ‘Kaasmarkt’ side. Streetlife refers to expansion plans from 1938 (two additional classrooms at the time) that were never implemented. A permit must be applied for these expansion plans... Streetlife’s ambition is to renovate the building with a focus on sustainability, whilst maintaining the architectural and monumental values of the building. In addition, it has been indicated that the spaces will be furnished with a circular furniture system.”

Atelier Krouwel is trots de aanbesteding ‘Kaasmarktschool’ te hebben gewonnen. Ons bureau heeft in samenwerking met Streetlife een projectvisie opgesteld is door de Gemeente Leiden gekozen als winnende voorstel. Atelier Krouwel is de hoofdarchitect van het project. Het projectteam is van plan om dit jaar de vergunningsprocedure te starten. Een belangrijk onderdeel van de ontwikkeling is het betrekken van de buurt en andere belanghebbenden. De geplande opening van de gerenoveerde school is begin 2027.

 Het Leidse bedrijf Streetlife BV heeft, in samenwerking met architectenbureau Atelier Krouwel, een winnend projectplan ingediend en bod gedaan voor het ontwikkelen van de monumentale Kaasmarktschool tot een gerenoveerde en uitgebreide broedplaats voor kunst en cultuur met woon- en werkateliers. De Kaasmarktschool is het voormalige schoolgebouw uit 1909 van de Protestants Christelijke Schoolvereniging in Leiden aan de Kaasmarkt. Dit prachtige gebouw is sinds 1985 een verzamelgebouw voor kunstenaars. En sinds 2014 een gemeentelijk monument.

In het meest recente persbericht vanuit de Gemeente Leiden staat het volgende: “De inschrijving van het winnend projectplan sluit op een goede manier aan op de visie van de Stichting Stadsatelier aan de Kaasmarkt. Het plan bevat een goede invulling van de binnentuin (het oude schoolplein), een groen dakterras en gewenste visuele opening van de gevel aan de Kaasmarkt. Verder heeft Streetlife het voorstel gedaan om naast renovatie ook het pand uit te breiden. Aan de kant van de Koppenhinksteeg en aan de Kaasmarkt-zijde. Hiervoor refereert Streetlife naar uitbreidingsplannen uit 1938 (destijds twee extra klaslokalen) die nooit uitgevoerd zijn. Voor deze uitbreidingsplannen moet een vergunning aangevraagd worden…Streetlife heeft veel aandacht besteed aan het verduurzamen van het pand waarbij oog is voor de architectonische en monumentale waarde van het pand. Daarnaast is aangegeven dat met circulaire meubelen de woonwerk-ateliers ingericht worden.“
